the man behind
the mission

guillermo garcia-manero, M.d.

Dr. Garcia-Manero is professor and chief of the Myelodysplastic Syndromes Section in the Department of Leukemia at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is a world leader in translational research, clinical investigation and treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Together with Hagop Kantarjian, M.D., Dr. Garcia-Manero is co-leader and co-principal investigator for the AML/MDS initiative in MD Anderson’s comprehensive Moon Shots Program.
After earning his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zaragoza, Spain, in 1991, he completed a clinical internship and residency (1996) and a clinical fellowship in hematology and medical oncology (1999) at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Garcia-Manero then joined the faculty at MD Anderson in 1999. Since then, he has been the principal investigator, co-investigator or collaborator for a large number of research projects and protocols.
Dr. Garcia-Manero’s research focuses on improving outcomes of patients with AML/MDS by advancing our understanding of the molecular basis of these diseases and by developing new therapeutic alternatives for patients. A renowned expert in the field, he has conducted extensive research developing prognostic models for these cancers, including one to identify apparently low-risk MDS patients who actually have poor prognosis. In 2012 he was named deputy chair of Translational Research at MD Anderson.

Thanks to the support of organizations like For The Win, we can make a significant difference in the lives of countless cancer patients and survivors.  We greatly appreciate their generous support and contributions in Making Cancer History®.
